Which awning fabric to choose? Tips on color selection in the awning fabric finder

In the extended state - with open-style awnings also when closed - the color of the awning fabric has a decisive influence on the overall appearance of your sun protection. “Which awning fabric to choose?”, this question arises in view of the large selection. In addition to our awning fabric finder, the following points will also help you answer this crucial question:

  • Depending on whether you want to buy a pergola awning in the garden, a free-standing awning by the pool, a balcony awning or a vertical awning, pay attention to the visual characteristics of the surroundings. If you would like your awning to blend in with the landscape, choose the color that dominates at the respective location. You can't usually go wrong with muted and classic colors like anthracite, brown, green, beige and blue. If you would like to consciously make a colorful statement, opt for brightly colored awning fabrics in yellow, orange or red. If you would like further trend colors for your awning, such as turquoise or pink, we will be happy to create them for you on request.

  • Consider the shade of the awning: When the sun falls, the rays of the sun reflect the color of the awning fabric and bathe all objects under the awning in an atmospheric light. What color should the shade of your awning be? What is your feel-good color? And which one suits the mood you want to create on your terrace or balcony?

  • Although all markilux awning fabrics from the sunsilk and sunvas collections offer the highest possible UV protection (UPF 50+), more or less light can shimmer through the awning depending on the brightness of the fabric color selected. This effect comes into its own with light-dark-striped awning fabrics.

  • You can also optimally complement the colour concept, which determines the interior design of your home, with the appropriate awning colour in the outdoor area. In this way, your “living room outdoors” reflects the cosiness of your interiors and forms a visual unit with them.

  • If you would like a specific color for your awning, we can manufacture your awning fabric as part of our color-on-demand service according to RAL. <br />Here is a selection of 1.625 colours available.

Perhaps you already have specific ideas about the color and pattern your awning fabric should have - but do you already know which structural effects are possible? If you would like to find out more about the various markilux fabric collections and their advantages, visit our awning cover page. There you will find even more information that will make it easier for you to buy an awning.

How to take proper care of your awning cover
So that you can reap long and lasting enjoyment from your awning cover, here are a few tips regarding its treatment and care: dust can best be removed when dry by means of a soft brush. Remove leaves, twigs and similar debris immediately. Small stains should be removed using lukewarm water and a commercially accepted, preferably liquid detergent suitable for delicate fabrics (5% soap solution, water temperature max. 30°C). Rinse thoroughly with clear water, leaving no residue.

What you should otherwise know about awning covers
Small imperfections such as knots, uneven yarn thicknesses, the occasional broken yarn, waviness or uneven rolling up characteristics as well as signs of fabric stretch - especially in the region of hem or panel joint - cannot always be avoided. Moreover, creases caused during the manufacturing process, which manifest themselves as dark lines when seen against the light, are unavoidable. The cover's inherent weight may mean that it sags to a certain extent. This will be exacerbated when the cover is wet. We guarantee that these phenomena will not reduce the service life of the awning nor impair its functionality. In this matter, we refer to the guidelines of the Industrial Association for Technical Textiles, Shutters, Solar Shading e.V. (ITRS) with regard to the product characteristics of made-up awning covers.

Depending on the fabric type, the awning cover will weigh around 300 g/m². It is made in a special fabrication process from panels that are joined together using the latest adhesive technology. Due to its inherent weight, the cover sags slightly between the panel joints. The tension in the awning cover is therefore higher at what are referred to as the longitudinal seams than in the intervening panels. The seams are necessary in order to stabilise the awning cover in the horizontal plane.

The difference in tension at the seams is due to there being a double layer of fabric. As the cover is rolled up on the roller tube, the two layers of fabric are forced to assume different diameters. The outer layer is stretched and the inner layer compressed leading to differences in tension within the cover. A visual effect of this can be so-called puckering. It is a physical phenomenon that occurs for technical reasons and is unavoidable. It occurs directly at the seams, but also in the form of a washboard ripple effect next to the seams. Simply using the awning can cause these effects to appear. And climatic influences can also play a role.

If the puckering occurs at the sides of the cover, this is referred to as elongation of the side hems. In most cases an active tensioning system keeps the cover almost permanently taut. Although seams and hems provide reinforcement, they also have to withstand the most strain. When the fabric is being rolled up, the seams and hems lie on top of one another which increases the pressure and tension even more. This results in increased strain and elongation. This can cause the side hems to pucker slightly when the awning is extended.

Puckering is a typical characteristic displayed by awning covers. It is a commonly known phenomenon that can occur in all awning fabric types and has physical origins. However, this does not affect the actual quality and functionality of the cover. Your specialist markilux dealer would be more than pleased to give you the benefit of his advice.

Your markilux awning is still in a good state, but the cover no longer appeals to you? The awning cover is completely out of date or it no longer matches the colour scheme on your patio? Generally speaking, the awning cover of any markilux model, however old, can be changed. If you are interested and would now like to give your awning a new, up-to-date look, please go to one of our qualified specialist dealers who would be happy to replace your awning cover.

P.S.:
We really mean it, when we say: no awning is like yours - awnings made to measure. For this reason your markilux awning, too, is unique. This is further emphasised by the works production ("BA number"), which, since 2002, has been used on all markilux awnings in the form of a small sewn-in label on the awning cover on the right-hand side of the front profile. This number can be used by the factory to identify the exact model, including which dimensions, accessories and extras it has.

ba-nummer

Solar protection fabrics are impregnated with a water-repellent finish and, if properly cared for and used at a pitch of at least 14°, remain impervious to water during short, light rainfall. During prolonged and / or heavy rainfall, the awning must not be extended or should be retracted to prevent damage. Over time, dust and dirt will settle on the fabric – a rich breeding ground for fungi (patchy marking) and / or moss. For this reason, the cover should never remain damp for a long period. So, when it has stopped raining, extend the awning again at the earliest opportunity to allow the cover to dry.
