Awnings and sun protection in perfection
Our awnings are available as textile shade-givers in numerous different designs. They are most commonly, although not exclusively, used as the following:
Most awnings consist of a metal frame, i.e. a cassette, folding arms, guide tracks or ropes, of an awning cover as well as of different optional accessories, such as wind and rain sensors.
All markilux awnings are made to measure. This means that the awning is produced to fit a precise location. In this way, patios, balconies and other areas can be individually shaded as required. The colour of the frame and awning fabric of custom-made awnings can also be freely selected. In this way, optimal sun protection and an individual design are achieved to suit the particular location and its style.
The covers of most awnings can be retracted and extended. Depending on the model and equipment, an awning can be opened or closed manually with a crank handle or electrically with a motor.

Which awning is suitable for a patio depends on various factors. The following points will help you find the right model:
As the name suggests, a patio awning is ideal for use on a patio.
Depending on the size of the patio, various awning models can be used. For small patios: patio and balcony awnings for niches; For patios with a conventional surface area: folding-arm awnings or pergola awnings; For particularly large patios – also in the hospitality trade, for example: large weather protection awnings.
If you need an awning that is particularly sturdy so it can withstand strong wind, then pergola awnings are just the thing. These are attached to the wall but also to the floor with two additional posts.
If your patio has a glass canopy, underglass or above-glass conservatory awnings can be installed.
If there is an overhang, open folding-arm awnings are a possible choice.
If there is no protective overhang, a semi-cassette or full cassette awning should be used.
A built-in awning can also be realised on some façades.
In addition to having shade from above, you can also have side awnings installed on your patio for lateral protection from the sun and wind as well as prying eyes.
If it is not possible or desirable to have an awning attached to the façade, awning systems anchored to the ground or free-standing (double) awnings can also be implemented in many cases.
At markilux you can choose from numerous different awning models for balconies:
You can opt for a classic folding-arm awning – with or without a cassette.
Awnings specially designed to fit niches are ideal for small balconies.
We recommend pergola awnings or robust awning systems for large balconies and roof terraces.
The cassette is the part of the awning that holds the folding arms when they are retracted. This means that folding-arm awnings and cassette awnings are not different awning models. A folding-arm awning can have a full or semi-cassette and a cassette awning can have folding arms.
Our pergola awnings are patio awnings with several fixture points: on the one hand, a pergola awning is fixed to the façade; on the other, it has posts that are anchored in the ground or in sturdy stabilisation boxes. Furthermore, a pergola awning is fixed laterally by guide rails along walls. A pergola awning is thus a particularly sturdy awning model with numerous beneficial features. Conservatory awnings and glass canopy awnings
If you would like to shade your conservatory or covered patio, you can have a special conservatory awning installed, or alternatively opt for an above-glass awning or an underglass awning.
Our freestanding awnings
The special thing about freestanding awnings is that they are not attached to a wall but fixed to the ground. As they are fixed to the ground (on the patio or in the actual soil), freestanding awnings can be used very flexibly: beside a pool, in the middle of a garden, at a jetty. There are no limits to your imagination here.
And if you don't want to or are not allowed to drill the roof or exterior wall of your building, freestanding awnings are an ideal alternative to classic folding-arm awnings.
A freestanding awning can be a parasol, but also an awning system – similar to a marquee. Explore the impressive markilux range to find suitable freestanding awnings.
Vertical roller blinds: an ideal alternative to shutters and Venetian blinds
Window blinds not only provide shade, they also visually embellish the façade of any house. Their biggest advantage over classic shutters and Venetian blinds, apart from their attractive appearance, is their functional diversity: depending on whether you want to let in more or less light and air into your home, you can choose between different styles of blind and types of fabric.

Whether you want to keep out the sun's rays, prying eyes or gusts of wind from the side of your patio or balcony, side screens are the perfect solution. Whether as a pull-out version or in a fixed frame and static – markilux side screens offer you an almost infinite choice of design options that will suit your taste entirely.
What does projection mean when it comes to awnings?
In a retractable awning, the projection refers to the distance that the fabric of the awning can extend out from the wall. Usually, the projection is defined as a numerical value when the dimensions of an awning are being specified. Thus, two of the most important measurements you need to consider when buying a folding-arm awning are the width and the projection.
What is a valance on an awning?
The valance of an awning is the fabric which hangs vertically and permanently down from the front profile. The valance serves on the one hand as a decorative feature and accordingly exists in different shapes, such as straight or wavy.
On the other hand, a valance also serves as vertical sun protection, but quickly reaches its limits when trying to fulfil this function due to the fact that it is limited in height. If you would like to protect yourself better against low-lying sun and inquisitive neighbours, we would recommend the markilux shadeplus which is the perfect addition to your patio awning.
Instead of asking how big an awning should be, we would recommend using a different method to determine the most appropriate size of an awning. Use the following questions and tips to find the right size for your awning:
How big is the area you want to shade?
Where is the area (patio, balcony etc.) that you would like to shade or from which direction and at what time of day does the sun hit this area?
Before you start using paper, a ruler and a calculator, try out our practical Sun Compass. With just a few clicks, this tool will help you determine the amount of shade provided by and thus the ideal size of the awning you should plan for – depending on the orientation of the patio or balcony and the sun's elevation.
If you are faced with the question “Which awning colour is the best?”, the following points will help you decide:
Awnings with stripes – you don’t get much more classic than that. But why are lots of awnings striped? There are several reasons why this particular design has prevailed:
Stripes in different colours create a fabric surface on which stains are less visible and annoying.
Stripes allow for particularly clean cut-off and connection points.
People associate striped fabrics with holiday, sea, beach and leisure time which is why they are particularly popular for awnings. Demand determines supply.
Nevertheless, there are definitely other colours and patterns you can use for awnings. In the markilux awning cover range, there are more than 250 cover patterns, including special designer covers developed by the markilux experts. In addition, we also realise your very individual colour wishes on request on the basis of RAL. You can also order awning covers with logo printing for the hospitality and hotel industry. When planning an awning, you should of course take the height into consideration. It's not just the height of the cassette that is relevant, but also the inclination angle when the awning is extended. So the latter should certainly be included in the equation. As a guideline, it is recommended you calculate a headroom of approx. 2 m at an inclination angle of approx. 15 degrees for extended awnings.
In the markilux range, you will also find special awnings with a particularly large inclination angle.
An electric awning naturally requires a motor that is connected to a power source. This motor automatically extends and retracts the awning. Electric awnings can be controlled using a wall switch, remote control or even a smartphone app.
Electric awnings can also be equipped with various accessories for even more comfort, including a:
These accessories extend or retract your awning independently depending on the weather and are therefore a very practical addition to the basic equipment. Explore the options open to you with electric awning accessories from markilux.
If you buy a markilux awning, you are unlikely to have to ask yourself this question because the exclusive markilux awnings feature a special awning fabric with a self-cleaning effect. The trick: when water droplets make contact with the awning fabric, they pick up dirt particles and run off the cover, taking the dirt with them.
If for some reason you do have to clean your awning, we recommend the following procedure:
Remove loose dirt, such as dust or damp leaves, with a soft brush.
Small stains that have accumulated can be treated carefully with a 5% soap solution (water temperature max. 30 degrees Celsius).
Awnings can certainly withstand light drizzle. In heavy rain, however, you should retract your awning to protect the awning fabric, folding arms and the technology.
In the case of pergola awnings, you can lower one pillar to drain rainwater in a controlled manner. Awning systems from markilux even have special holes in the awning fabric and rain gutters in the frame via which the water can run off in a controlled manner.
Awnings can withstand occasional rain showers. However, permanent moisture can affect the awning fabric, frame and technology long term. Therefore, make sure you allow a wet awning to dry completely before retracting it.
Awnings can withstand weak or strong winds depending on the variant (brand, model, optimal options such as trackfix). Information on the stability of an awning can usually be found in the product description.
The markilux awnings are assigned to specific wind resistance classes. For example, an awning of resistance class 3 can withstand wind force 6.
Our experts will be happy to advise you on the subject of wind force. Get in touch with us directly or contact a markilux specialist dealer near you.
