Our awnings are available as textile shade-givers in numerous different designs. They are most commonly, although not exclusively, used as the following:
Most awnings consist of a metal frame, i.e. a cassette, folding arms, guide tracks or ropes, of an awning cover as well as of different optional accessories, such as wind and rain sensors.
All markilux awnings are made to measure. This means that the awning is produced to fit a precise location. In this way, patios, balconies and other areas can be individually shaded as required. The colour of the frame and awning fabric of custom-made awnings can also be freely selected. In this way, optimal sun protection and an individual design are achieved to suit the particular location and its style.
The covers of most awnings can be retracted and extended. Depending on the model and equipment, an awning can be opened or closed manually with a crank handle or electrically with a motor.

The folding-arm awning is the most popular awning and is most often used on terraces and balconies. It provides the ideal sun protection and also protects against light rain. In this type of awning, the two folding arms pull the awning cover away from the so-called roller tube, which tightens the fabric cover.

Through our years of experience as awning experts, we have developed many useful tools over the years that should make choosing the right awning as easy as possible for you:
What does awning drop-out mean?
The awning drop-out refers to the retractable and extendable part of an awning that is covered with awning fabric. As a rule, the drop-out is defined as a value when specifying the dimensions of awnings. Thus, two of the most important size specifications you should consider when buying an awning are the length and the drop.
What is a valance on an awning?
The valance of an awning is the fabric that hangs vertically from the front profile. On the one hand, the valance serves as a decorative element and therefore exists in different designs, such as straight or wavy.
On the other hand, the valance also serves as vertical sun protection, but quickly reaches its limits in this function due to its often narrow design. If you want better protection from the low sun, we recommend markilux Schattenplus - the perfect complement for your patio awning.
How big should an awning be?
Instead of asking how big an awning should be, we recommend a different method of determining the right awning size. Use the following questions and hints to find the right size for your awning:
How large is the area you want to shade?
Where is the area (terrace, balcony, etc.) that you want to shade or from which direction and at what time of day does the sun hit this area?
Before you reach for paper, ruler and calculator, try our practical sun compass. With this tool, you can determine the shade and thus the ideal size of your planned awning - depending on the compass direction and incidence of light - with just a few clicks.
Which awning colour is best?
If you are faced with the question "Which awning colour is best?", the following points can help you decide:
Why are many awnings striped?
Awnings with stripes - it doesn't get much more classic than that. But why are many awnings striped? This design has been able to establish itself for several reasons:
Stripes in different colours create a fabric surface on which dirt is less visible and annoying.
The striped pattern allows for particularly clean cut-off and connection points.
Striped fabrics are associated with holidays, the sea, the beach, leisure time, which is why they are particularly popular for awnings. Demand determines supply.
Nevertheless, there are certainly other colours and patterns for awnings. In the markilux awning fabric range you will find around 200 designs, including special designer fabrics, designed by the experts at markilux. In addition, we can also realise your very own individual colour wishes on request according to RAL. You can also order awning pieces with logo printing for the catering and hotel industry. They will advise you on the possibilities, prepare a quotation for you and also take care of the professional installation of the motor.
Are you also interested in other accessories such as awning lighting, radiant heaters, rain sensors, sun and wind sensors? Or would you like to control your electric awning via a smartphone app? Feel free to contact us or our specialist partners with any questions.
How high should you install an awning?
When planning an awning, you should of course consider the height. Not only the height of the cassette is relevant, but also the angle of inclination of the awning when it is extended. You should therefore take the latter into account. As a guideline, it is advisable to calculate with a passage height of approx. 2 m at an inclination of approx. 15 degrees for extended awnings.
In the markilux range you will also find special awnings with a particularly large angle of inclination.
How does an electric awning work?
An electric awning naturally requires a motor that is connected to a power source. This motor causes the awning to extend and retract automatically. Electric awnings can be controlled by wall switch, remote control or also by smartphone app.
Likewise, electric awnings can be equipped with various accessories for even more comfort, including:
+ rain sensor
+ sun sensor
+ wind monitor
These accessories extend or retract your awning independently depending on the weather conditions and are therefore a very practical addition to the basic equipment. Explore now the possibilities for awning accessories that the electric awnings from markilux offer you.
How do you clean an awning?
If you buy a markilux awning, you will hardly have to ask yourself this question. Because the exclusive markilux awnings are equipped with a special awning fabric with a self-cleaning effect. The trick: If water drops hit the awning fabric, they absorb dirt particles and bead up.
If you still need to clean your awning, we recommend the following procedure:
Remove loose dirt, such as dust or damp leaves, with a soft brush.
You can carefully treat small stains that have settled with a 5 percent soap solution (max. water temperature 30 degrees Celsius).
Can awnings be left open when it rains?
Awnings can certainly withstand light drizzle. In heavy rain, however, you should retract your awning to protect the awning fabric, folding arms and technology.
In the case of pergola awnings, you can lower a pillar to guide rainwater away. Awning systems from markilux even have special holes in the awning fabric and rain gutters in the frame through which the water can run off.
What happens when an awning gets wet?
Awnings can withstand isolated rain showers. In the long term, however, the awning fabric, frame and technology can become permanently wet. For this reason, you should also allow a wet awning to dry completely before retracting it.
How much wind can an awning withstand?
Depending on the variant (brand, model, optimum options such as trackfix), awnings can withstand weak or strong winds. The stability of an awning can usually be found in the product description.
The markilux awnings are assigned to wind resistance classes. For example, an awning with wind resistance class 3 can withstand wind force 6.
Our experts will be happy to advise you on the subject of wind strength. Contact us directly or get in touch with a markilux specialist partner near you.
